Background of the study
E-learning has emerged as a transformative force in the educational landscape, offering flexible and accessible learning opportunities. In secondary schools in Illela LGA, Sokoto State, the adoption of e-learning has been accelerated by the need to complement traditional classroom instruction and adapt to technological advancements. E-learning, which utilizes digital platforms, online resources, and interactive tools, provides an alternative mode of instruction that can enhance the teaching and learning process. This mode of learning not only broadens access to educational resources but also facilitates personalized learning experiences that cater to diverse student needs (Garba, 2023). In Illela LGA, the integration of e-learning has been seen as a strategy to address challenges such as limited physical resources, overcrowded classrooms, and the need for up-to-date instructional materials. By leveraging technology, schools can offer dynamic content, real-time feedback, and collaborative learning opportunities that are not bound by the constraints of traditional classroom settings. Furthermore, e-learning encourages the development of digital literacy skills among students, preparing them for a future in a technology-driven world. Despite its potential, the effectiveness of e-learning in secondary schools in Illela LGA remains underexplored. Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited internet connectivity, and a lack of training for educators in digital pedagogy hinder the successful implementation of e-learning initiatives. Additionally, resistance to change among both teachers and students may affect the overall adoption of e-learning strategies (Ibrahim, 2024). These challenges underscore the need for a systematic evaluation of e-learning adoption and its impact on academic performance. By examining how e-learning platforms are utilized, the study aims to identify the factors that facilitate or impede their effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes. The insights gained from this research will contribute to a better understanding of how technology can be effectively integrated into the secondary education system in Illela LGA, ultimately informing policy decisions and guiding future investments in digital education (Umar, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing interest in e-learning as a means to modernize education, secondary schools in Illela LGA, Sokoto State, face significant challenges in fully realizing its potential. Many schools experience difficulties in the effective adoption of e-learning due to infrastructural limitations, such as unreliable internet connectivity and insufficient digital devices. These challenges are compounded by a lack of comprehensive training for teachers in digital pedagogy, which hinders their ability to integrate e-learning tools into their teaching practices effectively. Moreover, the resistance to change among both educators and students often results in underutilization of available e-learning platforms, limiting the potential benefits of technology-enhanced learning. As a result, the anticipated improvements in student engagement and academic performance are not consistently observed. Additionally, there is a gap in empirical research that specifically examines the effectiveness of e-learning in the context of secondary schools in Illela LGA. Without robust data on how e-learning impacts learning outcomes, policymakers and educational leaders may struggle to justify further investments in digital education initiatives. The current situation calls for a comprehensive evaluation of e-learning adoption, including an analysis of the barriers to effective implementation and the strategies that can overcome these obstacles. This study is designed to address these challenges by investigating the current state of e-learning in secondary schools, assessing its effectiveness in improving academic performance, and proposing actionable recommendations for optimizing e-learning practices. By doing so, the research aims to provide valuable insights that will help bridge the gap between technological potential and practical implementation, ensuring that e-learning becomes a viable and effective component of the educational framework in Illela LGA (Okafor, 2024).
